How to Eat Clean

Posted on

Eating clean has become somewhat of a buzz phrase, especially if you’re a user of instagram. But whilst you may have heard about it, you may not know what it is or more importantly, how to go about it.

So eating clean is essentially reviewing your food choices and only eating fresh, whole foods. But it’s not just about adding more fruit and vegetables in to your diet, it’s also about avoiding all the junk and processed food too.

Why eat clean? Well, the answer is as simple as the movement. By eating clean you’re giving yourself the best chance of getting the optimum nutrition as well helping manage diseases, avoiding disease, loosing weight, releasing toxins and in general you’re just going to feel amazing.

So what are the basic principles for eating clean?

Eat Whole Foods: The true definition of whole foods are those that haven’t been tampered with. Think about it in terms of anything that doesn’t need a label is whole. So vegetables, fruit, unsalted nuts, dairy products, seeds, whole grains and grass fed, free range meats.

Avoid processed foods: Processed foods are more like chemically enhanced foods. They are rammed full of excess salt, fat and their most important ingredient - sugar. It doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of your favourite foods, quite the opposite, just make home-made wholesome versions that will not only taste better but they’ll be healthier too.

Get rid of all the sugar: Refined sugar is bad for you and the majority of people eat way too much refined and added sugars in their every day diet.  Other, natural sweeteners can be used such as dates and agave but refined sugars have no place in a modern healthy diet.

Get in the kitchen: The reason most people fail on a clean eating plan is that they fail to cook their own foods. So instead of buying your food in packets and jars its time to get in the kitchen and to get cooking. Whole, fresh foods don’t need as much preparation as you may think.

Eat small meals, often: Around 5 or 6 small meals rather than three large ones will help rev up your metabolism and you’ll not feel deprived or be tempted to cheat.

Clean eating won’t just have an effect on your diet but will also have a great effect on the rest of your life. After all, if you’re eating well then you’re more likely to look after yourself in other ways.

But don’t think that eating clean has to be boring. If it’s difficult to imagine your food without added salt, sugar and additives then don’t forget that you can use the whole spectrum of herbs and spices to make interesting and flavoursome dishes.

Eating clean is the easiest diet - actually scrap that - lifestyle choice that you’ll ever make. You’ll never have to count calories again…So in conclusion, if you can’t pronounce what it says on the label then you really need to be staying away from it.
